Behind the Scenes with Justin Bieber & Eminem for the MTV VMA’s

For the MTV VMA’s last year, we shot Justin Bieber, Ke$ha, Nicki Minaj, Eminem and Drake over the course of two weeks for the VMA ad campaigns. In the Justin Bieber and Eminem shots, we knew that the best way to achieve the final concept was to shoot the subject and background separately. This was both due to the complexity of the shots as well as the limited amount of time we had with each subject.

By shooting Justin on seamless, we had more control over lighting and could focus our attention fully on his poses and facial expressions. But because of how busy certain celebrities are, some post processing if often needed.

We gave the girls a countdown and had them all charge towards the camera. 

We were able to composite the previously shot images of Justin right on top of the crowd shots to give us a better idea of how the two worked images together.

We actually had Eminem on set for the exploding car shot, but since we only had about two seconds to capture the explosion, it made sense to shoot him on seamless as well.
